The ability to make a trout out of a plastic bottle is amazing. It took two weeks of research to figure out how to make one, and that is only the first step.The next step is to put this bottle into water, and then a fish will emerge. The plastic bottle is a super-tactile surface that can be grasped by the fish’s nose, and will vibrate in a specific pattern when the fish tries to grab it.
For our fishing game, we wanted to create a mechanism by which we could control the amount of water in the bottle, so that the fish would want to grab the bottle and hold it when the bottle is too full. To do this, we used a piezo-electric nano-mechanical resonator to vibrate the bottle. The vibrator was a simple piezo-electric transducer that was attached to the bottle by an epoxy.
The epoxy had the added benefit of holding the resonator in place without affecting the surface of the bottle. That is useful because it meant that the piezo-electric transducer wasn’t affecting the shape of the bottle, which is why we didn’t put it in the actual bottle. We were able to make a prototype of the resonator and the epoxy that we needed, and then a few prototypes of the bottle that we wanted to make.
The resonator was one of our most complex components. It had to have the exact frequency of the sound. That meant the frequency of the sound had to be very precise and exactly in sync with the resonance frequency of the resonator. That meant we needed to get a very clean resonator, which meant we had to get a very clean surface which meant we needed to get a very clean epoxy.
